Vieira returns to NBC, Meredith Vieira Named NBC News Special Correspondent For 'Rock Center' Meredith Vieira will return to NBC News as a special correspondent for "Rock Center With Brian Williams," the network announced on Tuesday.Vieira's new role on "Rock Center" marks her return to NBC after leaving her post as the co-host of "Today" in June. The network just announced the new newsmagazine show on Monday.
NBC News president Steve Capus praised Vieira in a statement, saying, “From the day that Meredith joined us at NBC News, we knew she was family." He added, "She is as genuine as you can get, a world-class journalist and a captivating storyteller."
This will not be Vieira's first turn on a newsmagazine. She was a correspondent for "West 57th" on CBS in the 1980s. (She also famously worked for "60 Minutes.") Williams referenced her role on "West 57th" on Tuesday, calling her "a top-flight first-rate newsmagazine correspondent." He said, "I never missed an episode or a story that she worked on. Nothing has changed in all these years. We cannot wait for Meredith to make her first appearance on our new broadcast."
Vieira will also contribute reporting for “Today” and “NBC Nightly News.” She joined NBC in September 2006 as the co-anchor of "Today."
