Touchscreen gaming has never been bigger. The next 12 months could quite possibly see an unprecedented trio of new touch-sensitive portables hitting stores: the Nintendo 3DS, the Sony NGP, and (fingers crossed) a new iPad will all be vying to get their hands on your gaming fingers in the months to come. But while most gamers’ first exposure to playing games with their fingertips is likely to have been around 2004 with the all-conquering Nintendo DS, it was by no means the first touchscreen-equipped gaming device to hit the market.

VECTREX

VECTREX -- The short-lived Vectrex home game console was a curious beast. Boasting vector-based graphics, a huge game library and several cool tech features -- including a light-pen peripheral that players could use to manipulate objects on screen in certain art and music games -- it was somewhat ahead of its time. Sadly, that time was just before the great video game crash of 1983, which made quick work of the quirky system.

APPLE NEWTON

APPLE NEWTON -- Before there was the iPad, there was the Newton. Long, long before. About 17 years, actually, which amounts to several lifetimes in the tech world. One of the first touchscreen-equipped portables to be capable of playing simple games, it wasn’t much of a commercial success, but still retains a tiny-yet-committed fanbase.

GAME.COM

GAME.COM -- Released in 1997, dedicated gaming portable Game.com had an impressive feature-set: a stylus, a touch-screen, twin cartridge slots, and an available modem that let it browse the web and send email. Less impressive was its twenty-strong catalog of games -- and less impressive still were its sales, thought to be under 300,000.

TAPWAVE ZODIAC

TAPWAVE ZODIAC -- Think 300,000 is paltry? The Zodiac did even worse. And in a lot of ways, it was a shame. Running the same operating system as Palm’s series of PDAs, the slick, curvy portable had ready access to a vast catalog of apps and games. Tech writers loved it, but nobody else did. After 18 months on the market, it was discontinued.

TABLET PC

TABLET PC -- Essentially just a regular laptop that swapped a keyboard for a stylus-based touchscreen, Microsoft sank vast sums of money into pushing the tablet PC in the early part of the last decade. Perfect for strategy games, board games, and casual hits like Diner Dash, they were nevertheless too expensive and business-focused for gamers to take them seriously.

NINTENDO DS

NINTENDO DS -- Although it was far from the first touchscreen gaming platform to hit stores, it was the DS that really caught the imagination of gamers and developers. Selling over 140 million units since its 2004 launch and still going strong, it’s second only to the Playstation 2 as the most successful game system of all time. A series of hardware refreshes have kept the platform current; the latest, due this March, will take the marque into the brave new world of stereoscopic 3D.

IPHONE

IPHONE -- Before the iPhone, gaming was an afterthought for many cellphone users. But once the App Store came along in 2008, throwing open the doors for small-time and big-league alike to make their fortunes selling 99-cent games to millions of eager consumers, the mobile gaming market exploded. Three years later, the iPhone is birthing its own mega-franchises: witness the cross-platform success of sales giant Angry Birds.

IPAD

IPAD -- After the disappointment of Newton, Apple could have been forgiven for swearing off the tablet forever. Fortunately for its legion of fans, the success of the iPhone apparently convinced them to take another crack at it. The result: 15 million iPads sold last year, with gaming as a major focus. And with rumors of an upcoming iPad 2 announcement reaching feverish heights, that impressive total could be just the start.

SONY NGP

SONY NGP -- Touchscreens on the front of your gaming portable? That’s so 1993. Sony’s next pocket-sized system, currently codenamed “Next Generation Portable” or NGP, puts a touch-sensitive pad on the machine’s reverse as well, and kits it out with just about every hot portable tech you can imagine. Latest word is to expect the machine in the U.S. this holiday season, priced around $300 depending on hardware options.

MICROSOFT SURFACE

MICROSOFT SURFACE -- Welcome to the future. Perhaps. Microsoft’s “Surface” technology promises table-sized touchscreens that can recognize objects placed on them, respond to gestures as well as simple taps, and can be used by multiple people simultaneously. In short, they’ll play one heck of a game -- in the event they ever get beyond the tech-demo stage. Outside a few custom corporate apps (and a starring role in MSNBC’s 2008 election coverage), they’re still a pipe-dream for home users.

New Apple MacBook Pro in March?

The newest MacBook Pro from Apple Inc. may arrive as early as next month, according to Apple Insider.

Apple Insider cited a Danish blogger who found out through an employee at an Apple retail store that the newest version of MacBook Pro should launch on Tuesday, March 1.
However, the March date could be pushed back as “Apple's product launches are often a moving target that can see last minute delays of several days due to unexpected anomalies in manufacturing or the company's supply chain,” noted Apple Insider.
The new laptop is said by Apple Insider to feature Intel’s new core architecture, Sandy Bridge, but PC Magazine laptop analyst Cisco Cheng noted that the rumor may not be valid.

"Apple is usually the last OEM to move to new Intel chips, and given that Sandy Bridge systems just resumed shipments, it's very unlikely Apple will have MBPs by March 1st," Cheng said in the report.

The last update for the MacBook series was done almost a year ago in April 2010.

Unfortunately, the goal of Osaka University's AFFETTO was to create a robot modeled after a young child that could produce realistic facial expressions in order to endear it to a human caregiver in a more natural way. Impressive, sure, but we're not ready to let it suckle from our teat just yet.

The tech world is buzzing with rumors that Apple will soon release the second version of its popular iPad. There’s rampant speculation about a possible iPad2 release date, but the company is not saying when it will happen.

Starbucks customers can now use an app to pay for their coffee at thousands of locations nationwide. With a smartphone, an app and a Starbucks card, users can get a barcode they can use to pay. An Android app reportedly is in the works.

10 HUGE Questions About The iPad 2

Will the iPad 2 be generally the same size and design as the original iPad?

This seems likely. The iPad's 10-inch screen is a good middle ground between a smartphone and a laptop.
But we assume the iPad 2 will be thinner. And the case itself may be made out of different materials.

Will the iPad 2 support Verizon?

Apple has already started selling the iPad at Verizon Wireless, bundled with a mi-fi wireless hotspot.

Given that the companies now have an official relationship, it makes sense that the iPad 2 could ship in a Verizon-compatible edition. (Perhaps alongside a Verizon iPhone.)
Now the question is: Will the iPad 2 support Verizon's (and AT&T's) new 4G networks? Or only 3G for now, because of battery life, 4G network size, etc.?
And: Will Apple let carriers subsidize the price of the iPad, if someone signs a 2-year data contract?

When the iPad 2 comes out, what happens to the first iPad?

We assume the iPad 2 will cost the same $499 entry price as the iPad. (Barring any carrier subsidies.)
But if Apple can, it makes sense to knock the price of the original iPad down by $100 or $150, using it to draw people into the store, the way the $99 iPhone does. (Many of those people will actually end up buying the more expensive iPad 2.)
The future of the iPad is having three or four of them sitting around the house and office. So the more affordable Apple can make them, the faster that future can be realized.

Will the iPad 2 have a retina display?

It makes sense for Apple to increase the screen resolution on the iPad, the way it has with the iPhone and iPod touch. But as many have argued, it would be challenging for Apple to quadruple the iPad's resolution the way it has with its smaller devices. That would be a LOT of pixels to power.
Perhaps a middle ground, that's more pixel-dense than today's iPad, but not as crazy as the iPhone?
Or maybe Apple will really push the limits and push out an amazingly gorgeous 10-inch retina display?

Will there be a front-facing camera for FaceTime chats?

This is one of the most obvious, definite additions to the iPad 2. We fully expect a front-facing camera on the new iPad.
And it looks like there will also be a camera on the back, too, to keep consistent with the iOS lineup.

An iPad mini?

The newest tablets out there -- Samsung Galaxy Tab, RIM BlackBerry PlayBook -- seem to be converging on 7-inch screen size. And it's been rumored that Apple will also have a 7-inch iPad at some point.
Perhaps the market will eventually force Apple to make something like this. And there's no doubt that Apple has internally tested something like this. But we don't think this is going to happen in 2011.
Steve Jobs has slammed the 7-inch screen as being too small, and said that Apple thinks the 10-inch size is the minimum to create great tablet apps.
If anything, perhaps Apple will offer a bigger iPad before it offers a smaller one.

How thin can the iPad 2 get?

The next iPad will almost certainly be thinner. The existing one feels pretty hollow, so we think Apple could save some space on the inside and make a thinner iPad.

RIM promises that its BlackBerry PlayBook will be 10 mm thin, or roughly 1/3 thinner than the iPad. Samsung's Galaxy Tab is a hair thinner than the iPad, too.
Apple has a habit of making things unbelievably thin, like the original iPhone, and the iPhone 4, and the new MacBook Air. So look for Apple to really wow people here.

What about the guts?

We anticipate the iPad's processor and video technology will get a speed boost in the next edition. But perhaps more important would be more RAM, so that you could do things like keep multiple web tabs loaded at the same time.

Expect Apple to say something like, "the iPad 2 is twice as fast."

What about the back?

Apple's portable device lineup has a wide range of back materials. The iPad is a brushed aluminum. The iPhone 4 is glass. And the iPod touch is a shinier metal.

What will the next iPad use? The current one isn't as easy to hold on to as it could be -- a little on the slippery side. So a flat glass back like the iPhone 4 might be an improvement.
But that might also add weight to the device. And the curved back of the current iPad makes it thinner at the edges, giving it an overall sleeker look and feel. So perhaps Apple will leave this alone.
Less likely, plastic, like the iPhone 3G used. This would probably feel too cheap.
Also: How about colors?

What about the software?

The iPad finally has iOS 4.2.

But what's in store for the next iPad and iOS 4.3 or 5? Maybe the newsstand that Apple is reportedly developing with publishers? FaceTime is an obvious inclusion.
Maybe a huge upgrade to Apple's Ping service, which makes it more of a social network -- with its own app -- for sharing everything, including apps and photos?

BONUS: iAds for iPad?

With some impressive media apps in the App Store -- ranging from Wired to Flipboard -- it seems inevitable that Apple will create an iPad-specific program for its iAds advertising business.
This may take a bit longer -- iAds are still slowly rolling out for the iPhone -- but it's possible it could be available by the iPad 2 in 2011.

So, when's it going to launch?

If Apple goes for the usual 1-year release period, the iPad 2 could launch in April.
But it's possible that it could happen earlier. Some reports suggest the iPad 2 could ship as early as February.

iPhone 4 Breaks all Records

How badly did Verizon Wireless customers want the iPhone 4—a phone that’s been on the market for seven months and is likely to get replaced in just a few more? Apparently, they wanted it more than any other phone in Verizon’s history. Verizon Wireless on Friday announced that the iPhone 4 broke all previous first-day device sales records in company history, and it only took two hours to do it. “This was an exciting day,” said Dan Mead, president and CEO for Verizon Wireless, in a press release.
Keep in mind, Verizon Wireless and Apple opened preorders at 3 a.m. ET Thursday morning, and even then, only to existing Verizon Wireless customers. While the iPhone 4 broke Verizon Wireless’s sales records just two hours later, preorders lasted until Thursday afternoon, when both Verizon and Apple had to stop accepting them.
The only way to get a Verizon iPhone 4 now is to wait for when they become publicly available. You can try to order one online for delivery or in-store reservation at 3:01 a.m. ET on February 9, or try your luck with walking up to stores on February 10, when doors open at 7 a.m. local time. Judging by Verizon Wireless’s battered and bruised sales records, though, it seems like demand is pretty healthy, which means lines are likely to be long. If you’re determined to get a Verizon iPhone 4 as soon as possible, it may be wise to collect a comfortable lawn chair and your best line-waiting shoes.

Appearance
If we take as a basis for CP09 and all comparisons to build on this, the new cool phone has changed. It's no longer the stump of glossy plastic, which is very unpleasant to handle.
